English Sycamore Sawn Timber

English Sycamore | WL West & Sons

Sycamore Platanus occidentalis

We love English Sycamore for its enchanting pale creamy-yellow colouring, fine texture and lustrous grain pattern. The most sought-after sycamore is described as rippled because of the rippled grain figuring and is used in the making of high-quality musical instrument cases. The very best violins, violas and cellos backs (including Stradivari instruments) are made in Fiddleback sycamore.

Always popular with furniture makers, the grain is smooth textured and fine, so sycamore turns well and finishes superbly. English Sycamore is now becoming more desirable mixed with contrasting hardwoods in furniture - walnut, wenge and oak are popular combinations. It is non-toxic, so is useful for applications such as kitchen worktops, chopping boards, platters and flooring. The fact that it is homegrown and from well-managed woodland sources means English Sycamore is a far more sustainable option than imported sycamore or maple. Trees can grow to huge dimensions – taller than 35m with more than 2m trunk diameter - so boards can be sizeable!
