British Cedar Sawn Timber
Cedar of Lebanon Cedrus libani
Instantly recognisable, the cedar tree has a unique sweet scent and has been used in construction and cabinet making for centuries. Historically, cedar has been used to make wardrobes and chests of drawers because the scent keeps cloth-eating moths and insects at bay. It is fast growing in the right location and generally planted as an ornamental, landscape tree. As they come from a tall tree with a large trunk, boards can be very wide and long, making them ideal for counter tops or single plank tables.
Cedar is a useful and durable timber that dries fast with little degrade. It can be painted and varnished but the surface needs to be degreased for best effect. It has a medium fine grain but striking, frequent large knots do occur. Its colour varies from a pale yellow to a golden straw and it glues and nails well.
It should be noted that this is not a commonly forested species in the UK, this means that supply can be limited.
